David Z. Abel loved the "Art of the Deal" and in 1978 he partnered with a friend to share in a small flea market booth to sell various items. David, 18 years old, enjoyed everything about the booth; from the buying and selling to the merchandising and servicing his customers wants and needs. Finding his niche, David used his father’s station wagon, his Grandmother’s garage and his ability to sell everything he owned (including his bike for $700) and created Dave’s Stereo – later incorporating it into DAS. Just two short years later, the business expanded into a growing wholesale business and six retail locations in farmers’ markets and flea markets.
During that same year, David secured a new location for the main office and warehouse in a recently closed school building located in Palmyra, Pennsylvania. By 1989, Dave’s Stereo, now DAS, had become a national distributor, with three warehouse facilities in the northeast and five sales offices spanning the country employing 150 associates. Annual sales had also reached a milestone by surpassing $60 million.
In 1992, the economy crashed and left DAS to drastically downsize to one office and one warehouse, and painfully reduce staff by 40% to survive. The time period forced David and every DAS associate to return to the companies’ core efforts and initiatives. This streamlined, focused view produced a successful rebound evident in the Company’s current leadership position as the world’s number one full service marketing and global supply chain portfolio company in the Travel Center Industry. Today, DAS is still headquartered in the same closed school and employs over 700 associates (including 18 of the first 29 hired), generating sales in the hundreds of millions.
David and his brother Michael Abel, President and CEO of DAS, believe the success of DAS resides with God who has always been watching over them. This belief is reflective in the Company’s #1 core value - God Honoring in all they do. According to the Abel brothers, DAS is not their company, but God’s Company, which He has entrusted to them to steward.
It is because of this heartfelt commitment to stewardship DAS donates time and monetary resources to local and global organizations such as Cornerstone Community Ministries, Mom’s House, Habitat for Humanity, Haiti Partners, House on the Rock Family Ministries, Stewardship - A Mission of Faith, and A Women’s Concern annually. In addition, DAS is a founding sponsor of Brittany’s Hope, a non-profit co-founded by David Abel, dedicated to facilitating adoptions of special needs children from around the world. Inspired by a young woman whose life was tragically cut short, Brittany’s Hope honors her dream to pursue "a world where all children know the peace and love only a family can provide."
